With 36% of women reporting that they need clitoral stimulation to achieve orgasm, it’s no wonder we are obsessed with the long misunderstood clitoris. From the rosebud tip, that peaks out of the labia minora, to the hidden clitoral network responsible for all those sensations during sex. Yet despite our obsession with the clit - so many people don’t understand what or where the clit is. Instead of poking and prodding your genitals (or someone else’s) and hoping to magically stumble across the clit, we are here to point you in the right direction and answer the question where is the clit.

Please note that every body is different and every clitoris is unique, so whether you are looking for your own or someone else’s we will help you keep on the right path.

What is the clit?

Arguably the star of the anatomy show, it’s the only organ that has the sole purpose of giving pleasure and sensations, with double the nerve endings of a penis. It has zero to do with childbirth so wipe those notions that everything related to the vulva has a reproductive function.

 Anatomy of the clitoris

You might be thinking, “well I've seen my clitoris and it doesn’t resemble that” - but that’s because the clitoris is a complex structure that extends into the body. The small mound you see (or may not see) and think of as the clitoris is just the tip of the complex external and internal iceberg.

In fact, the clitoris is actually around 9cm long when not aroused and increases in size when aroused as part of the clits sexual response. This is why during sex or high states of arousal the external part of the clitoris protrudes from the hood very slightly. This is not the same as an erection, but the clitoral tissue does become firm and sensitive to touch!

The external part, which you may have referred to as the clitoris in its entirety, is the glans clitoris - the small tip (commonly referred to as a button) hidden away by the clitoral hood. This part of the clit can be played with externally by adding pressure, vibrations and different sensations.

By playing with this part of the clitoris - you may find you or your partner reaching a climax, as all those nerve endings feel ever so good to play with! However, not all parts of the glans clitoris are created equally when it comes to pleasure - plenty of women have found that they have a preference for stimulation on certain areas and in different intensities of this tip.

Now we have spoken about the bit you can see, what about the internal clitoral network? The internal extension forms two roots and vestibular bulbs of the clitoris that sit on either side of the vagina as seen above.

The internal clitoris is responsible for a lot of pleasure during penetrative sex, as the G-spot is part of the clitoral network. The two sets of glands that make up the clitoris are the Bartholin glands that sit on either side of the vaginal opening. These are the beauties responsible for producing personal lubricating fluid.

The skene glands or vestibular glands are near the urethral opening, they produce a fluid that can be released through the urethra during sex, which some think is to do with female ejaculation (also known as squirting).

Where is the clit?

The majority of the time when someone is wondering how to find the clit, they are referring to the glans clitoris, which is the external part of the clitoral structure and feels like a tiny button. The size of the glans clitoris varies in size and visibility but on average is the size of a pea - hidden underneath its very own protective hood. Everyone’s vulva is unique and if you can’t see it right now we recommend some self-exploration so you can get to know your vulva better.

Where Is The Clit?

How to locate your clitoris

Try a genital self-viewing exercise by picking up a hand mirror, relaxing, and having a deep look. This should be a regular viewing exercise to see what is going on down there. Just have a look around and appreciate your vulva in all its glory! You can even just use your fingers to touch and stroke yourself to help pinpoint the exact area your clitoris lies and what feels good.

How to touch your clitoris

The clitoris has double the amount of nerve endings of a penis so instead of prodding the clitoris or rubbing directly onto the clitoris, which can be very sensitive, gently explore to find out what pressure and movements arouse you. Using a sex toy, such as a vibrator, can add new sensations to this area that holds so many nerve endings. Every body is unique and your pleasure is no different.

Some individuals enjoy consistent pressure and stimulation, whilst other clits are so sensitive strong vibrations are uncomfortable and enjoy lighter stimulation.
